Nancy's Biggest Day at Camp (1941)
Puberty, menstrual education booklet for girls (Personal Products, U.S.A.)
(Modess, educational, puberty, sanitary napkin, pad, menstruation, teen,
teenager, menstrual, period, cycle)
Girls saw this booklet the year after they saw rival Kotex's booklet
As One Girl to Another, a cheerier and charming
work. Nancy, whose pigtails establish her innocence and inexperience, takes
an emotional beating from her campmates because of what she doesn't know,
especially about mens-, well, you know. Nevertheless, some readers might
have easily identified with her.
You won't find anatomical drawings here, which might have bored girls.
The hardware, well, software, aspect takes the stage: how to fold and pin
the darned pads, which had troubled women for years (see a 1920s
Kotex instruction sheet).
Even though the company that made Modess made
tampons, it didn't offer them to these young readers undoubtedly because
of the threat of "losing their virginity" and other moral degradations
before they were into their teens, a public relations
problem exasperating Tampax for years mentioned in its company
history.
I thank the donor for this and many other items donated to this museum!

Below: That
thunderhead over Nancy's head bodes ill for the bullied girl.
Is she thinking, "OMG, please, I need help!"
Um, she's probably thinking "Something's biting
my leg. Hurry up and take the picture!"
