Hello,
I found your site while doing
research on Women Performance
Artists for my thesis project,
and decided to submit this
piece.
I made it last fall in
sculpture class; during
critique, it was judged as
having 'too much information'
and 'gross.' I was told it
was a throw away piece.
It is carved limestone, the
eggs are torn from found paper
extraction thimbles, and I used
oil and acrylic paints, glue,
and embroidery floss.
This piece was made during a
particularly painful period,
both monthly and
life-wise. I am now 37;
each month, my periods are
different and more
painful. When I showed this
to my women friends, they
immediately related, and
understood that I was trying to
express the pain and beauty of
bleeding, the sadness and relief
it brings.
After looking at each of the
artists on your site, I think I
will add my own menstrual blood
to the paint, just to make it
even more 'mine.' More
'ours.'
Thank you for providing this
forum for discussing this most
vital of human fluids.

I will graduate this fall with
a BFA in Sculpture. My
thesis project will involve
performance, fiber and sound
- I'm still working on it,
but will submit images
when it's finished.
