this
museum and menstruation in 2003. The
newspaper Corriere della Sera (Io Donna

The Art of Menstruation at the
Museum of Menstruation and
Women's Health

"Self Exploration, looking for Aunt
Martha"
16" x 20" pastel on paper, 1985, ©
2002 Judy Jones
"I locked myself in a friend's
bathroom for 16 hours and this is
what I gave birth to!
"It was my first attempt to
paint a body and I felt extremely
guilty.
Not only had I crossed over the
line (being taught never to look
at nor
touch my body) looking for "Aunt
Martha," which is what we called
our periods, made my sin even
greater.
"And what to do with 'the
afterbirth'? Thats what I call the
mess
I have to clean up after painting.
Since it wasn't my bathroom I
dumped
all the rags and mess into my
backpack. Guilt, guilt and more
guilt!"
