Model Cheryl Tiegs for Carefree

Cheryl Tiegs is an American model whose photos
have ranged from high-fashion clothing to "cheesecake," which
are sexy pictures exposing much skin, but not pornographic - you know what
I mean, which I think is what an attorney general of the United States once
said when confronted with the same question.
Ali McGraw is best known in the film Love Story
(1970), for which she received an Academy Award nomination.

This ad probably comes from the early 1970s; the magazine
is unknown.
Look at the Carefree tampon, which had no applicator
(like o.b.).

The art director for twen (short for the English word "twenty [-year-old,
á la Seventeen magazine]," and always written lowercase) was
Willy Fleckhaus, who greatly altered and, I
think, improved magazine design. He later art directed the magazine of the
Frankfurter Allegemeine Zeitung, perhaps Germany's
greatest newspaper, when I was the art director of a tiny American magazine,
also in Frankfurt. He awed me; my boss kept telling me to call him up, but
I was, well, too shy to contact the great man. When I read his obituary
in the FAZ I was relieved, because now the pressure was off. The article
said that he had lived in Italy, anyway. But I have imitated his design
to this day.
Basically, the words in the ad warn the reader
that there are special glands in the "intimate region" (the mind
maybe?), code for the crotch, and soap won't do a long-lasting job on the
odor they produce. Is this spray shellac?
Read an ad from 1969 for the American deodorant Pristeen,
which expresses similar thoughts. And see what Lysol
cleaned in the 1920s, besides toilets.

As a popular model, Tiegs appeared in many American fashion
magazines early in her career. January 1975 issue

Like actresses Carol Lynley and
Susan Dey, Tiegs had a doll made in her image, although
it doesn't look like her. Just one guy's opinion.

Tiegs posed for the Sports Illustrated
swimsuit issue (Cathy Rigby and Mary
Lou Retton also made Sports Illustrated), although I doubt this picture
is from that magazine. A site visitor said that the picture forms part of
a poster.
