Murray & Nickell Blue Cohosh Root
Small boxes of old American patent medicine for women's diseases,
headache, stomach illness, menstruation, and birth control
SarahAnne Hazlewood generously donated the
medicine to this museum, part of her huge gift of medical instruments,
books and advertising material about women's health.
Harry Finley created the images.

The box measures 2 1/8" x 2 1/8" x 1" (5.5
x 5.5 x 2.54 cm). A recent study cautions against herbal supplements - one
form of Cohosh included. Read more here.

Am I imagining something or does the red
circle contain a face sticking its tongue out?
Inside the yellow circle sits a skull - or is it? Another artist sneaked
in something risque in a booklet for Midol.

The brown paper is thin.

Emmenogogue means promoting
the menstrual flow (and might promote abortion) and diaphoretic,
causing perspiration. How many consumers would know that? Why didn't
the package use common words?
