THE MUSEUM OF MENSTRUATION AND WOMEN'S HEALTH
Tampax vs. diapers: Tampax menstrual tampon ads, 1989 & 1990, U.S.A.
"I hate pads - they're like wearing diapers."
"No, the tampon can't get lost. All you can lose are those diapers."
One thing many women hate about menstrual pads is that they seem like
diapers - they are diapers, something babies, incontinents and old
people also wear. And that contributes to their hatred of menstruation itself.
An Italian magazine even pictured this.
One of the advantages of the tampon is no diaper, which Tampax
touts in these ads. The top ad is part of the series that includes "Are they hard to put in?" and "Are you sure I'll still be a virgin?"
Tampax gave more technical advice in its 1950s Bulletins
and Dr. Dickinson discussed the advantages of tampons over pads in his 1945
report.
