MUSEUM OF MENSTRUATION AND WOMEN'S HEALTH

Kleinert's protective briefs, panties
Ads, 1960s, U.S.A.

Ads for underpants that hold menstrual pads or shield the clothing from leakage from pads and tampons have existed for decades around the world: Japan, Germany, America and other places.

These ads, as usual for menstrual equipment, emphasize secrecy - no one will know you're menstruating, a horrifying condition if detected!

I've always thought if women advertised they were menstruating this taboo would disappear, fast. But I'm just a guy.

Actually, apparently at least once in history (and it has to be more than that) women did do that.

I thank the donor of the scans!

Below: Secret and its synonyms are well-used in menstrual advertising,
including in the name of a tampon.
Below: The word those pushes menstruation away, which is what most
women seem to want.
Even in the 1960s pins accompanied some menstrual gear, something
Tampax bragged for years to have done away with.
