Kotex menstrual pad ad, Sears, Roebuck catalog, 1928, U.S.A.
Sears sold Kotex (above) in 1928 at about $0.30 a pad for super in today's
prices. "Super" soon changed to "hospital" because women
were reluctant to ask for something sounding so large (but what is hospital?),
and women used hospital-size pads to absorb the vaginal discharge that occurs
after childbirth. Note the nurse, cross and "health protection,"
familiar items creating confidence by association with medicine.
