See early tampons and a list of tampon on this site - at least the ones I've cataloged.

Secret menstrual tampons (1930s-1940s?, U.S.A.)
Tampons
The tampons have an antiseptic film, or so claims the instructions,
something that would be thought potentially harmful today.
Procter & Gamble kindly donated the box and contents as part
of a gift of scores of menstrual products.

The tampons appear to be made of cellulose, are very hard
(maybe from age), and are covered with a powder
(that's the white "dust" on the black background, my scanner,
above) - which might be the antiseptic film mentioned in the instructions.
They measure 2.25" (about 6 cm) long, 0.6" (1.4 cm) in diameter
and the string is 5.75" (14.5 cm) long. The lower
tampon shows how the string comes wrapped, right from the package,
below.

The box holds two translucent packages, now very fragile, above, of
five tampons each. Look how they alternate ends.
