The Museum of Menstruation and Women's Health

A History of the Menstrual Cup (continued)

Tassaway's Annual Report for 1970

"Tassaway" sounds like "TOSSaway," doesn't it? That's probably because
it was meant to.

Women used the company's first cup, Tassette, and
reused and re-reused and re-re-used used it and didn't buy enough
of them to keep the company in business. So if they tossed them
they had to buy another. At least that's my take on it.

The company eventually tossed itself away with stock price

And stock was a subject of this annual report. How neat, huh?

Since Tassaway wrestled with Tampax for women's blood, Tambrands
got this photocopy of the annual report fast. I wonder who the spy at
the meeting was.

The former Tambrands, which for decades made and sold Tampax,
donated this photocopy of the report as part of a huge donation
of its products and documents.

Below: A photocopy of the cover of the 8-page report.
The little gray balls between the "as" and the "c" show
where someone punched holes probably allowing for
inclusion in a binder.

It seems odd that the report cover calls Tassaway "the first proven advance
in menstrual protection in over 30 years - that would be before 1940 -
because the company's first menstrual cup, Tassette, had appeared
and failed after that date. But that cup was probably identical to Leona Chalmers's
, patented in 1937 (at right), and Chalmers was associated with Oreck's
Tassette cup. Complicated.

Right above, bottom left, and at the top of this page: Barbara Waldron and Eduardo Peña.
Note how Mrs. Waldron's stature tilts "Tassaway."
After Tambrands sent me many documents about menstrual cups, I contacted
former Tassette company president Robert Oreck for more information. He referred me to
Mrs. Waldron, whom I never located. Dr. Peña wrote articles supporting the cup.
